Descent Into The Void

A frustrated abstract piece turned into something unexpected.

This work turned out to be quite a surprise.

Initially, my intention was to create something abstract with these textures and color gradients, among other elements:

I wasn't happy with what I was getting. Maybe the choice of textures wasn't the best, or the choice of colors. It wasn't necessarily poor, it just didn't captivate me enough.

I thought, "Well, maybe today isn't the best day for abstractions. Let's go for a more concrete path." And since I had the words "path" and "concrete" in mind, I remembered that I had taken a (rather bad, by the way) photo of some outdoor stone steps the day I was photographing concrete textures.

Instead of starting a new project from scratch, I decided to try my luck and add the photo to the layers of textures I already had stacked in my software. That is, my normal work process, but in reverse.

It didn't take long to find several captivating interactions between the photo and the textures until I found one that stood out among the others.

After adding a texture of peeling paint on metal and another of aluminum (which gave a slight whitish patina on the edges), I considered the work complete.
